MARY WESTPHAL


Mary Westphal is a life long resident of the City of Sylvania and has served as a member of Sylvania City Council for nearly 18 years.


Mary served as a member of the Sylvania Municipal Planning Commission prior to being appointed to the City Council seat vacated by Dr. Read Backus in 2008. She was elected to her first four-year term on Council in 2009 followed by elections to subsequent terms in 2013, 2017 and 2021. She served as Council President from July of 2012 to December of 2020. Mary was re-elected to the role of Council President in January 2025.


During her time on council, Mary has served on every committee at some point. Currently, she chairs the Finance and Safety Committees. Additionally, she serves on the Zoning & Annexation and Utilities & Environment Committees.


Mary is a graduate of Notre Dame Academy and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism from Bowling Green State University. She has served on many community boards, including the Sylvania Area Joint Recreation District (SAFJRD) Board, the Sister City Commission as well as the program committee for Sylvania Community Services. Mary and her husband, Bob, retired from their day jobs in August 2024. The have three adult children and two grandchildren.
